Therapeutic, Fictional, and Separating from Reality

The InterContinental Khao Yai Resort opened in August 2022, is a five-star hotel nestled by the edge of the UNESCO-listed Khao Yai National Park, just northeast of Bangkok. At the hotel entrance, stacks of vintage travel trunks balance next to old wooden trolleys and it immerses you in another dimension. There is a railway track cutting through its gardens. It’s easy to be fooled into thinking an actual train once rolled through the jungle hills around the hotel.

The resort has been designed by award-winning architect and interior designer Bill Bensley. The designer team recycled railroad carriages and transformed them into train car suites with marble-clad bathrooms, Victorian bathtubs, and furnishings upholstered in jewel-hued velvet. Each train car suite is named, designed, and accessorized to express a different train journey around the world, and it brings all guests back to the golden age of rail travel.

All the details in the resort are inspired by the golden age of railroads, the idea came from Thailand’s 19th-century train station - the King Rama V-era Pak Chong railway station. This makes the hotel unique and popular among train lovers.

The resort offers a total of 159 guest rooms, suites, and villas, and these accommodations are spread out over several buildings and villas throughout the resort. Bensley designed each guestroom to resemble the interior of a railway carriage, from narrow hallways, clerestory ceilings to sliding cabin doors. In order to add a historic feel in designing the resort, the designer used plenty of oil-rubbed bronze KOHLER fixtures in the bathrooms.
